Cleaning Tip: Odor in my garbage disposal

How can I get rid of that awful odor in my garbage disposal? (garburator)

Odor in your disposal comes from clinging residue that hasn't moved through but is still in the garburator rotting - which can very quickly grow a high bacteria count especially meats.

A garburator that does what it's designed to do shouldn't smell.

Here's what to do:

Run lots of water -- lots. You'll want to flood the chamber so it forces the scraps and fragments against the walls and blades, really flushing the unit out. Once clean and flushed it won't smell. You can also add in vinegar or baking soda or grind some citrus peels.

If your garburator has stunk for awhile, best to clean and disinfect the rubber drain baffle.

Do not put in your garburator:

Chicken bones

Banana peels

Corn Hucks

Celery

Bacon fat - greasy materials -- potential clogs

Gravy

Broiler pan drippings

Anything greasy down the garburator - make sure to follow it up with cold water for at least 1min to keep any fat solid enough to be swept away.

STEP 5. FOLLOW A SYSTEM TO CLEAN THE ROOM
With all the stuff out, you are ready to clean the room.
Start up high. (top to bottom)
Move around the room in one direction. (left to right, and end where you started)

Use the broom to get at cobwebs.
Always clean floors last. Starting from the furthest back - and end up at your exit door.
